I just finished writing a long entry for my Literature Blog and it was about writing from heart. It was a 900-word long entry and I enjoyed writing it. It took just 45 minutes to finish it. I enjoyed doing it and I felt that it was a good entry. I was surprised because most of the time, I am too much distracted with many things and these days, writing long entry has become like a thing of the past. In this entry, I like to write about the things that can distract us easily and create problem for our blogging career.
1. Internet Browsing: While writing any entry, we need to do some search and research through Internet and this is a useful part. However, the bad part is that when you browse aimlessly. In other words, you writing about a mobile phone but you are reading the sports section of a news website. This is very harmful. It hurts you in two ways. First of all, it increases the time of finishing your article or sometimes, you even cannot finish it on that day. Secondly, it takes away your mind and this way, sometimes, the quality of the current entry gets harmed.
2. Facebook and Twitter: Fortunately, I don’t have any account in any of them. However, most people in our time, use them a lot and many bloggers think that they are very helpful in promoting their blogs. I agree with them because regularly see that visitors to my blog post some links of my entries in Facebook and Twitter and it helps. However, many people get addicted especially to Facebook and instead of it becoming a useful tool, it becomes a big diversion and they lose a lot of time. This happens to many bloggers in Internet.
3. Blog Stats: I guess that I am the biggest sinner of this sin. I am Sitemeter addict and I check my Sitemeter stats almost every hour or sometimes more than 3-4 times in a single hour. Some people are crazy for Google Analytics. Some people check their Feedburner stats a lot. All these are useful tools but excess of anything is bad and you should get rid of this addiction. I am trying to do it. I am planning to see my Sitemter only 4 times a day. Of course, this problem happens if you are too much bothered about your traffic. For example, sometimes, I write a long entry or something related to Google trends or a hot topic and then I check a lot whether the entry could manage to bring search engine traffic.
4. Comments: The main difference between a blog and a traditional website is that in a blog, your visitors can put comments and you can respond. However, some bloggers are literally obsessed about replying comments and they spend a lot of time for it. You do not need to answer each and every comment. Some bloggers just express their opinion and it does not matter much if you reply or not reply. However, when someone asks a question then you must reply. Some bloggers are also very meticulous about visiting the blogs of the commentators and post a comment in reply to their blogs. It is a good strategy to build relationship in Blogosphere. However, if it takes a lot of time then you should rethink your strategy.
5. Social Bookmarking Sites: Who does not want to be in the home page of Digg, Reddit or Fark? I know that I want it deeply. Well, in the initial days of my blogging career, I used t submit each and every entry to many social bookmarking sites. Now, I know that it is not needed. I now submit only long and quality entries in social bookmarking sites.
6. Adsense Revenue: Thanks God that I have managed to get rid of this habit. I used to check Adsense stats almost every hour. Now, do it just twice a day and sometimes just once a day or once every two days. This is very bad habit. If you have this habit then please, try to get over it.
7. Reading Other Blogs: No, I don’t want you to stop reading other blogs. Even, I would encourage you to read more blogs if you can afford to get the time. What I would ask you to change is that when you are writing an entry then just focus on the actual writing process and do not get distracted. I used to do it a lot and now, I realize that because of this matter, I could not write enough content for my blogs.
8. Don’t Think so much: When you write an entry, naturally, you have to think. You just cannot type all the time. Yes, you have to think a lot. However, I noticed that often, I think too much and write less. I bother too much whether the entry I am writing is good or bad. Again, excess of anything is bad and often, I cannot finish my entries because of this bad habit. I am sure that many many bloggers have the same problem.
Last words: While writing this entry, I could manage to get rid of all the bad habits that I wrote above and as a result, I have been already able to write more than 800 words in just 30 minutes. I am satisfied with the quality of this entry. Thus, I noticed that if I can get free from distraction then I can easily write a long entry of 1000 words in an hour. I just wish that I could write 5 such entries every day. This would surely bring a lot of success for my blogging career. Now, I am going to spend another 10 minutes to make it a bit longer because, I want to make it 1000 words.
I could do it. I could write 1000 words in 37 minutes. In fact, I am very happy to do so. I noticed that this entry became better than many entries I wrote spending 4-5 hours. At least, I am happy. I am happy because I found that increasing productivity can be very easy if you follow just some simple rules.
